Owned by Bacchanal Wine Imports, Liotro represents the direct involvement of Bacchanal’s family into the selection of the wines. This unique advantage guarantees consumers the highest quality for the best price. Each year, the selection is made in strict collaboration with the winemakers and the producers from various regions throughout Italy, so that consistency and quality are maintained year after year.
Liotro is produced in cooperation with Baglio Curatolo Arini. The story of this winery begins in 1875. Garibaldi had conquered Sicilia in 1860 and the Kingdom of Naples followed — Italy was unified. A young Vito Curatolo Arini decided to build a winery at the center of his vineyards in Marsala. Each generation has added a new chapter to the Curatolo Arini story by continuing this proud tradition of winemaking. They are the oldest family-owned Marsala producer in Sicilia. For more than 135 years the family’s enthusiasm, passion and commitment to making fine wines have never lessened. In the late 1970s, the Curatolo Family made the decision to add a range of still wines, made only from local Sicilian grape varieties, which express the unique character and flavors of the Sicilian terroir.
The name Liotro is a name inspired by the Elephant fountain located at the center of the Piazza del Duomo in Catania. It is a monumental work of art that was created between 1735 and 1737 by the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Its main element is a black basalt statue of an elephant, commonly called “u Liotru†and is considered the emblem of the Sicilian city of Catania. The name was given to the Liotro brand by Filippo Pistone co-founder of Bacchanal. Filippo was born in Catania.
